A common question that travelers ask is if they should tip their limo driver. We don’t (or shouldn’t) think twice about tipping servers, bellhops, and other service professionals.
But for some reason, limo drivers aren’t always seen as part of that group.
As members of the service industry, limo drivers should be tipped. Because it is so frequently a question, it’s worthwhile to explain why before we get into how much.
Why You Should Tip Your Limousine Driver
While there has always been a standard for showing gratitude for good service with tips, gratuity has evolved into an important piece of a service professional’s compensation.
Limo drivers, for instance, make an average of a little more than $11 an hour. Sometimes we forget how much they do as part of their jobs. They are patient, customer service focused, and detail oriented.
A typical day for a limo driver includes driving to and from pickup locations, waiting for riders, helping travelers with luggage, monitoring travel times to make sure riders reach their destinations on time, and dealing with traffic so you don’t have to.
Doing that well certainly deserves some appreciation.
How Much You Should Tip?
As for how much you should tip, the rule of thumb is 20% for service you are happy with. But there are some caveats to that number.
First and foremost, you should check with your limo company to find out if gratuity is already included in your contract. Some companies offer an all-in-one price for their services, and that already includes a baseline tip for the driver.
Whether your contract includes gratuity or not, you should consider tipping beyond 20% for exceptional service.
This shows your driver that you truly appreciate the extra attention and care that they have given you during your service.
The added bonus for repeat customers is that, as a good tipper, you will be remembered and can anticipate that same level of exceptional service in the future from a driver who knows you appreciate what they do.
